Hiking Tips for Fall Treks

8/30/2018

September Hiking Tips - Canadian Rockies
Fall hiking offers much more to enjoy; the spectacular color changes, uncrowded trails and generally good conditions. But beware, fall hikes also offer challenges. The best tip we can offer is "Be Prepared"; weather changes are a fact of life. It is possible to experience sunshine, rain and even snow, with sudden temperature drops within a couple of hours. When planning your outing, keep in mind that the daylight hours are shorter, so the distance of your selected day hike becomes more important. Can you make the return trip in daylight hours? Keep in mind the following tips for your fall adventure in the mountains.
  • Safety First. Have the right gear for the weather you may encounter. Think layers.
  • Happy Feet. Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots are a must for fall hiking.
  • Pack extra socks, ensure toenails clipped.
  • Hydration. Keep hydrated, carry ample water.
  • Hat & Sun blocker. The fall sun is still strong at elevation.
  • Bear Spray. Enough said!
  • Pack food and snacks. Carry fire starter device and make sure you bring a good flashlight, just in case!
  • Be sure to conduct a pre-hike study of the trail selected.
  • In the fall, it can suddenly turn cold. Have you got a space blanket or a lightweight sleeping bag?

To enjoy your hike, hike smart. We appreciate your patronage and would love to see you back!
Don't forget you can stock up on snacks and hiking supplies at the General Store!
