Hiking Safety Around Wildlife in the Canadian Rockies

7/21/2021

hiking around wildlife tips in the Canadian Rockies
Here are a few common sense tips for hiking safety around wildlife.
  • All Animals are Wild! Always be Cautious! They may look tame but they're not.
  • Never, ever feed wild animals. Approaching and feeding wildlife causes animals to lose their natural fear of people and they can become aggressive and dangerous.
  • Never put people, especially children, in harm's way by posing them with wildlife.
  • If you are a hiker, carry Bear Spray and be Bear Smart, avoiding surprise encounters. A loud shout, singing and conversation is more effective than Bear Bells.
  • If hiking, travel in groups whenever possible.
  • If you must take your dog, keep it on a leash!

What to Bring:
  • Wear full or mid-cut boots for greater support. Tennis shoes and urban athletic shoes are too flexible for roots and rocks.
  • Hat, sunglasses and sun-blocker a must, fire starter & pocket knife a good idea too.
  • 1-2 litres of water for a day hike, fruit, nuts and a sandwich as well
  • Jacket or vest for mountain chills & bring a rain slick.
  • Bug and Bear Spray recommended.
