Hiking Tips for the Icefields Parkway

While we actively encourage you to discover the spectacular hiking trails along the Parkway, we also wish to remind you of our wildlife neighbors. Here are a few common sense tips for safety around wildlife.
  • Wildlife is wild! They may look tame but they're not. Be cautious.
  • Never, ever feed wildlife. They can become aggressive and dangerous.
  • Never put people, especially children, in harm's way by posing them with wildlife.
  • If you are a hiker, carry Bear Spray and be Bear Smart, avoiding surprise encounters. A loud shout, singing and conversation is more effective than Bear Bells.
  • If hiking, travel in groups if possible.
  • Wear full or mid-cut boots for support. Tennis shoes and urban athletic shoes are too flexible for roots, rocks and rough terrain.
  • Hat, sunglasses and sun-blocker a must, fire starter & a pocket knife a good idea too.
  • 1-2 liters of water for a day hike; fruit, nuts, and a sandwich as well.
  • Jacket or vest for mountain chills & rain slick.
  • Bug spray recommended.
  • If you must take your dog with you, keep it on a leash!

To enjoy your hike, hike smart. Remember, you can stock up on hiking supplies and food at our General Store.  We appreciate your patronage and would love to see you back!
