Hiking Tips for Fall Treks

8/30/2018

September Hiking Tips - Canadian Rockies
Fall hiking offers much more to enjoy; the spectacular color changes, uncrowded trails and generally good conditions. But beware, fall hikes also offer challenges. The best tip we can offer is "Be Prepared"; weather changes are a fact of life. It is possible to experience sunshine, rain and even snow, with sudden temperature drops within a couple of hours. When planning your outing, keep in mind that the daylight hours are shorter, so the distance of your selected day hike becomes more important. Can you make the return trip in daylight hours? Keep in mind the following tips for your fall adventure in the mountains.
  • Safety First. Have the right gear for the weather you may encounter. Think layers.
  • Happy Feet. Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots are a must for fall hiking.
  • Pack extra socks, ensure toenails clipped.
  • Hydration. Keep hydrated, carry ample water.
  • Hat & Sun blocker. The fall sun is still strong at elevation.
  • Bear Spray. Enough said!
  • Pack food and snacks. Carry fire starter device and make sure you bring a good flashlight, just in case!
  • Be sure to conduct a pre-hike study of the trail selected.
  • In the fall, it can suddenly turn cold. Have you got a space blanket or a lightweight sleeping bag?

To enjoy your hike, hike smart. We appreciate your patronage and would love to see you back!
Don't forget you can stock up on snacks and hiking supplies at the General Store!

August Hiking Tips for the Icefields Parkway

8/2/2018

While we actively encourage you to discover the spectacular hiking trails along the Parkway, we also wish to remind you of our wildlife neighbors. Here are a few common sense tips for safety around wildlife.
  • Wildlife is wild! They may look tame but they're not. Be cautious.
  • Never, ever feed wildlife. They can become aggressive and dangerous.
  • Never put people, especially children, in harm's way by posing them with wildlife.
  • If you are a hiker, carry Bear Spray and be Bear Smart, avoiding surprise encounters. A loud shout, singing and conversation is more effective than Bear Bells.
  • If hiking, travel in groups if possible.
  • Wear full or mid-cut boots for support. Tennis shoes and urban athletic shoes are too flexible for roots, rocks and rough terrain.
  • Hat, sunglasses and sun-blocker a must, fire starter & a pocket knife a good idea too.
  • 1-2 liters of water for a day hike; fruit, nuts, and a sandwich as well.
  • Jacket or vest for mountain chills & rain slick.
  • Bug spray recommended.
  • If you must take your dog with you, keep it on a leash!

To enjoy your hike, hike smart. Remember, you can stock up on hiking supplies and food at our General Store.  We appreciate your patronage and would love to see you back!

August on The Parkway

7/30/2018

Bow Lake in August

Traditionally, August is the warmest month of the season with sunny skies and settled weather; the best time to plan a mountain adventure. All hiking trails are open and as a result, you'll have some company in the back country, but that is a good thing. Hiking with other folks or in groups is advisable in August when the berries ripen and the bears are enjoying the harvest, fattening up for the coming winter.

The clear August days are also the photographer's dream. If you are hoping to spot wildlife, be on the road in the early morning, as most animals disappear into the cool of the forest to escape the heat of the day and the noise of traffic. But remember, don't feed them!

Want to come stay with us to rest after you hike? Be sure to check out our August Web Only Special!

Tips for Enjoying the Parkway in Peak Season

6/29/2018

  • Start your day early; you'll see more wildlife and miss the heavy traffic.
  • Visit attractions like the Columbia Icefield and Glacier Skywalk in early morning or late afternoon to insure your space on the attractions.
  • Trail head parking occasionally overflows by mid-morning, so plan ahead.
  • If you are hiking in the Rockies, include insect repellent with DEET to deter ticks and mosquitoes and carry bear spray in your day pack.
  • Pack a rain slicker and sweater in case of sudden weather changes.
  • Watch your fuel gauge, The Crossing is the only service centre between Lake Louise and Jasper.
  • Need lunch for your hike? Pick up a bag lunch at The Crossing Cafeteria.
  • Follow the posted speed limits - animals often dart out of the ditch or the surrounding forest onto the highway.

Tips and Ticks

Hiking Tips for Successful Trips

When planning your outings in the Rockies, the best tip we can offer is "Be Prepared". Weather changes are a fact of life. At higher elevations, it is possible to experience rain, snow, sudden temperature drops and blazing sun all in the same day. The following are key tips for your hike preparations.
  • Safety First. Have the right gear for the weather you may encounter. Think 3 layers.
  • Happy Feet. Properly fitting boots, extra dry socks, toenails clipped, and swap out shoes/hiking boots before and after your hike.
  • Hydration. Keep hydrated, carry ample water.
  • Hat & Sun blocker. Avoid the fierce burns of high altitude sun.
  • Bug Spray. Bear Spray. Enough said!
  • Pack food and snacks. Carry fire starter device.
  • Be sure to conduct a pre-hike study of the trail selected.
  • In the spring, it can turn cold. Have you got a space blanket or a lightweight sleeping bag?
  • Spring is tick season. Note the above image of a tick on a leaf, waiting for you to brush by and "hop on."
  • After hiking, leave your backpack at the door, strip down and have a shower. Check the back of your neck, hair & scalp, upper body and legs. In the off-chance you have a tick, follow the correct procedure of removal with tweezers.
  • But don't be overly alarmed. Famous hiker and local author Brian Patton has written numerous trail guides and I quote, "I've never picked up a tick in the Rockies in northerly exposed slopes or in sub-alpine and alpine regions."
  • The tick season is pretty much done by July in the Canadian Rockies.
  • The Rocky Mountain tick is not the "bad guy" of the tick world and does not spread Lyme disease. That dubious honor belongs to the "deer tick", endemic to BC's southern valleys and the Lower Mainland.

To enjoy your hike, hike smart. We appreciate your patronage and would love to see you back!
